Attack on titans 4 × 27: «Retrospective»

Attack the titans come back for another week action packed episode, of those that lift you from the chair by emotion. In fact, “Retrospective” leaves some of the best moments since MAP took on the challenge of taking over from Wit Studio in the animation. For those who have not yet seen the episode, it is now available in the original version with Spanish subtitles through Crunchyroll. And, if you have already seen it, then we review the most interesting parts of the episode, but not before remembering that the following lines will contain spoilers of the same.

From this moment on, Connie, Mikasa and the rest must put aside their feelings for the people in front of them and complete your mission to the last consequences, even if these involve having to kill their former colleagues in the army. During practically the entire episode there are some of the best action scenes we’ve ever seen animated till the date. The MAPPA team has taken many liberties to adapt the 129th chapter of the manga and the result is spectacular. Numerous fight scenes have been added to give all the characters a moment to shine (especially Mikasa), mixing CGI and 2D animation into an audiovisual spectacle.

She began by glorifying the terror of the titans and the spectacle of fighting them using the 3D Maneuver Kit. Now that we’ve finally returned to an episode that relies heavily on a fight between titans and humans, the interpretation we have of said confrontation is completely different. Victory is more somber than rewarding, and there is no longer terror, but fear and despair on both sides. Hange, Mikasa and the rest, aided by Annie and Reiner in his Titan form, must fight their way to the airship. Their plans change when they discover that it actually takes half a day to get it up and running. From then on, they must protect Mrs. Kiyomi and the engineers, who know how to get her up and running, until they reach the ship, their means of transportation to another area where they can prepare to face Eren and the Rumble. During combat, it is especially conspicuous emotionality and even vulnerability from Annie’s eyes when she uses her body to protect the Azumabito, as she remembers that in many ways she is still a scared girl in the body of a monster. Also, the scenes of Reiner protecting Annie, in which the titans are shown to be very fragile in many ways in the face of advanced weapons like lightning spears, convey emotions that would have been unimaginable in the earlier arcs.

The boy ignores Pieck’s warnings and transforms, so we get to see him for the first time in Pieck’s Titan form. However, as expected, Falco ends up losing control and attacks a Pieck who manages to hold him so that Magath can get him out of the titan’s interior. Still, the Alliance outclasses the Jaegarists in both close combat and titan powers. However, at least for me, each death brings little satisfaction, as Floch and company are actually frightened individuals blindly and desperately clinging to the only way they see viable for survival. In fact, Floch tries to the last breath, convinced that his cause is the just one. But Gabi shoots him before he can damage the boat they are going to flee on.

The moment in which everyone is seen exhausted, helping each other to get on the boat, seems very significant to me, taking into account what was experienced in the previous two episodes. They are old enemies supporting each other after a small victory that it is only the beginning of the hardest fight that lies ahead. As everyone leaves on the ship, Magath, aware that the Jaegers could use a Marley ship in the harbor, decides to stay behind. The man meets Shadis, who has lent a hand to the Alliance by blowing up the train carrying reinforcements for the Jaegers. Both form a small alliance to destroy that only ship that remains, obtaining a round end for their respective character arcs. Shadis finally has her moment to shine. He remembers when he was the commander of the Reconnaissance Troops, a position that he resigned and that Erwin then occupied, knowing that he did absolutely nothing but bring death to his companions. On his part, Magath reinforces what he had already been building in previous episodes: he is aware of the mistake he made by imposing hatred on some children, taking away their right to have been able to have a normal life. Both Keith Shadis and Magath understand before they blow up the ship that, after a lifetime of mistakes, they’re doing the right thing.

Given the rate at which the colossal titans are advancing, it is impossible to save Liberio and the continent from Marley. Annie, whose only motivation for fighting was to save her father, gives up and admits not wanting to fight anymore, in which she is possibly the most human reaction we have seen so far to the character. Finally, the preview of the next episode gives very few clues of what will be animated for the hypothetical end of the anime of Attack on titans. There is still a lot of content to cover for a single episode, but we may have news on March 27, since the broadcast of Attack on Titan has been canceled due to the celebration of the event. Japanese Animen. We will have to wait until April 3 to find out how it continues and how the final stretch of the manga will be animated. Bets open.
